Math Teaching DVDs for Preschoolers and Grade School Kids
69
The following is a list of educational Math DVDs that are useful for toddlers, preschoolers or grade schoolers. These DVDs are a good reinforcement for what children are learning in school. They are also excellent for homeschoolers.
Munchkin Math
The Munchkin Math series include 3 DVDs: Telling Time (ages 2 to 9), Counting Money (ages 3 to 9) and Shapes (ages 2 to 8). The Munchkin Math DVDs are different in their approach to teaching. They use animation, repetitive chants and actions to reinforce concepts.
The Telling Time and Shapes DVDs will be great for preschoolers but they may not be as interested in the Counting Money DVD. It doesn't have animation, so it probably wouldn't hold their attention. Counting Money is better for 1st graders who are starting to learn about money. The Telling Time DVD does a great job of teaching the concept of time within a story format. The Shapes DVD teaches numerous shapes including octogons, pentagons, hexagons, 2D and 3D shapes and open and closed shapes.
Rock 'N Learn
Rock 'N Learn has a large number of DVDs that cover Phonics, Math, Science, Reading Comprehension, Writing and Spanish. The DVDs use animation and music to teach concepts. These videos are excellent for reinforcing what children are already learning.
Their Math DVDs include:
- Colors, Shapes and Counting
- Addition and Subtraction Rap
- Addition and Subtraction Rock
- Multiplication Rock
- Multiplication Rap
- Division Rap
- Fractions and Decimals
- Math Word Problems
Leapfrog
There are 3 Leapfrog math DVDs that are perfect for preschoolers to 1st graders. These DVDs teach concepts as part of a story. My only complaint with these DVDs is that there is too much story and not enough math. I would estimate half of each show is story related rather than educational. Having said that, the math they do teach is done very well.
Math Adventure to the Moon - teaches counting, skip counting by 2's, 5's and 10's, sorting and basic addition. This is the best of the Leapfrog Math DVDs.
Numbers Ahoy - teaches number recognition, quantities and counting.
Math Circus - teaches numbers, counting, addition and subtraction.
Musical Math
Heidi Songs has a few Math DVDs.
Musical Math uses music and singing to teach kindergarten and first grade level math concepts. This includes counting, skip counting, patterns, addition, subtraction, money and estimation. You can view a preview at the Heidi Songs website: http://www.heidisongs.com/Math/Musical_Math.html.
Jumpin' Numbers and Shakin' Shapes - Volumes 1 and 2 teach counting to 30 and shapes. There is also a Spanish version. You can see previews at:
